German Club Alumnus Launches VT Sports Podcast
“Sons of Saturday” began as somewhat of an accident.
The idea for the Virginia Tech Athletics-focused podcast stemmed from weekly phone calls between three die hard Virginia Tech Hokies - Patrick Finn (GC ’17), Grayson Wimbish, and Billy Ray Mitchell. Pat would call in from Arlington, VA, Grayson would call in from Los Angeles, CA, and Bill would join them from Atlanta, GA. During these calls, the trio discussed all things Hokie athletics - coaching, recruiting, facilities, upcoming games & more. Billy Ray Mitchell was already a seasoned podcaster and pitched Pat and Grayson the idea of launching a show centered exclusively around Virginia Tech Athletics - a pitch met with minimal interest from the other two.
That changed over the course of one weekend. On a fall September Saturday in Athens, Georgia, Pat and Billy Ray met in Athens to watch the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game was a sight to behold, featuring an atmosphere that every die-hard college football fan dreams about, similar to that of a prime time game in Lane Stadium. Soon after the game, an announcement from Virginia Tech’s athletic director Whit Babcock declared that Virginia Tech would play against SEC opponents in upcoming series' spanning the next two decades, with match-ups against the likes of South Carolina, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Vanderbilt. Ecstatic about time spent in Athens and the announcement from the VT athletic department, the three gentlemen decided to combine their unique personalities and perspectives into what would eventually become the Sons of Saturday podcast.
The group began releasing weekly podcasts late September of 2019, covering all Virginia Tech Division I sports featuring player & coach interviews, bringing positivity, passion and humor each week. Notable guests include Punter Oscar Bradburn, Director of Recruiting John Iezzi, former Women’s Basketball player & Team Canada player Sami Hill, and radio personality Josh Parcell - with many more coming down the pipeline! In addition to weekly podcasts, the Sons do giveaways and promote fan & student engagement on social media with intentions of bringing Virginia Tech sports fans together and giving back through Ut Prosim.
Pat and Grayson come from Hokie families - Pat served as President of the Virginia Tech Class of 2017, and relatives Kevin, Kenny, and Kyle Finn, as well as Tommy Burford are all current or former GERMAN Club men, while Grayson is a third generation Hokie. Billy Ray '18 was an offensive lineman on the football team during his tenure in Blacksburg. To keep up with the Sons of Saturday, check out the information below:
